Resident Experiences at Can Serrat

Before we came to Can Serrat, we had no idea what to expect from our time there. Of course we were excited about being in Spain, and near Barcelona in particular. We knew we would be making art and seeing a lot of art, but what we couldn't predict was how profoundly our artmaking practice changed as a result of our time there.

The time in our quiet studio and on treks through the village and mountains surrounding yielded rich discussions about conceptual directions and even the rudimentary premises of our practice. We came in as installation and performance artists who flirted with video, and left as video artists who also worked two-dimensionally. Our residency served as a catalyst, propelling us into conversations and meditations that we never would have had if not for the time and space for reflection that Can Serrat affords. On top of that, it was all the pertinent conversations with other residents over long dinners under the grape arbor that stirred up new ideas and new ways of looking at the world around us. We made so many connections with artists and writers in other countries and feel like those connections have led to lifelong alliances. For us, Can Serrat was both a turning point in our career and a life-changing experience.
